In the News…
The U.S. North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) reported that three civilian aircraft violated the temporary flight restriction (TFR) near Mar-a-Lago while President Donald Trump was at his Palm Beach, Florida residence. F-16 jets scrambled to intercept the planes. TFRs are issued for safety and security purposes.
The civilian planes were escorted out of the flight restriction zone by the military jets, two of whom used flares to “draw attention from or communicate with the pilot.” NORAD encouraged aircrews to check Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) from the Federal Aviation Administration before flights so they adhere to the TFRs.
“NORAD and the FAA work closely together to keep the skies over America safe, with close attention paid to areas with Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR),” stated General Gregory Guillot, the commander of NORAD and the U.S. Northern Command.
The general continued, “Adherence to TFR procedures is essential to ensure flight safety, national security, and the security of the President.”
He added that an “excessive number” of recent civilian pilot violations of temporary flight restrictions “has resulted in multiple responses by NORAD fighter aircraft to guide offending aircraft out of the TFR.” He said pilots need to read the Notice to Airmen prior to take off.
